Alistair Skinner came to China in 2000. As a keen sailor he was disappointed to learn that there was no organized leisure sailing in Shanghai and so, in his words, "[he] was going to have to change the situation or it would be a short stay". Early the following year, Alistair made contact with other keen sailors and together they decided to set up a social group for sailors with a similar predicament. The first meeting in a pub in downtown Shanghai boasted 14 people.

In June 2001, a committee was elected and funds raised by the Founding Members (see below) to purchase the Club's first boats. Early the following year the 'fleet' arrived - six tired and battered Wanderers purchased from the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and subsequently refurbished here in Shanghai.

In June 2004 Alistair shipped his own Bolero 26' racing keelboat to Shanghai from his old club, Port Edgar Yacht Club in Scotland. The boat, renamed 'Four dragons' after the founding Club members, now takes pride of place along with the clubUs fleet at the Shanghai Water Sports Centre on Dianshan Lake. On most weekends Alistair can be found on the Committee Boat where he is able to put his considerable experience to good use on the Race Committee.

As the Club's founder, Alistair held the post of Commodore from 2001 up to March 2006 when he handed over the reigns and assumed the honorary title of Club Admiral, an advisory position to the elected Committee. During his 5 years in office, Alistair has worked closely with the Chinese Authorities to promote and develop the sport of sailing in China and, more specifically to create a truly unique 'entry level' sailing club here in Shanghai. As a keen sailor himself, Alistair's vision, enthusiasm and complete dedication to the sport has helped to make the Shanghai Boat and Yacht Club into the vibrant sailing community that it is today.

Our club exists thanks to the generosity and vision of these founding members:
